About: LifeStyles, Inc. is a non-profit organization whose mission is to provide affordable, accessible services, activities and goods to support and encourage individuals, families, and community development. In February of 1998, LifeStyles was created to address the many needs of our community. Since its inception, LifeStyles has been dedicated to issues relative to health, human services and economic growth in the community. LifeStyles acts as an outreach, referral, and service delivery source promoting the dissemination of materials to educate the general public and navigating persons through existing services. LifeStyles serves as one of the lead agencies supporting households who are at-risk or are currently homeless.
Lifestyles’ Transportation Services:
Southern Maryland RIDES: The “Southern Maryland RIDES” Transit program provides subsidized and coordinated transportation services for eligible low- to moderate-income, persons with disabilities, and veteran Southern Maryland residents to get to employment- and medical-related appointments (i.e., interviews, One-Stop career centers, gathering of identification documents, work attire, doctor's office, or other items) throughout the Washington, DC metropolitan region.
Summer Meals: Our Summer Meals program is a partnership with the Charles County Public Schools, Department of Community Services, Department of Social Services, and other community agencies. The goal is to provide meals to children that are eligible for free- and reduced lunch during the summer months.
Senior Rides: Our “Senior Rides” program assists low-to-moderate-income seniors in Charles County with subsidized, door-to-door transportation services to assist them in meeting their “basic needs,” i.e., medical appointments, grocery store, nutritional programs, post office, etc. In addition, we provide social and recreational transportation for those to attend senior center programs and other life-enriching
What is the most rewarding part of working with Maryland community members?
The most rewarding part is to provide a one-stop-shop of resources. While we provide transportation services, we find that many of those that receive such services need food, clothing, housing, financial assistance, and other gap-filling resources. LifeStyles is able to provide all of those resources under one organization, making the process efficient and effective.
What are some projects you are working in?
We are currently working on a new housing project endeavor, Southern Crossing. This is an innovative concept in Southern Maryland to renovate a former hotel into transitional supportive housing units for 47 households. This has become a community-wide project, that will connect persons with on-site resources, case management, and of course, transportation services!
What are some transportation challenges you are facing?
We are always in need of volunteer drivers throughout Southern Maryland. While we want to expand services, we have found it challenging to expand the capacity to meet the growing needs. Volunteer drivers receive free training, mileage reimbursement, and a rewarding experience of helping persons in need.
Why did you join TAM?
We joined TAM because we see the value in connecting to available training opportunities, networking, and furthering our connections statewide. We have been a long-time human services transportation provider and believe that joining TAM further solidifies our connection to the transportation industry.
What do you want to get out of membership?
Our staff and volunteers are excited to utilize the RTAP library and other resources as available.
